Quick. That’s what I think this fortnight’s entry in the alphabet playlist of metal will be. There just aren’t a lot of bands that I’m aware of that start with the letter Q.
I’ve worked harder on this entry than quite a few of the articles I’ve done so far this year. Even when asking colleagues and friends for their tips, it became obvious early on that this fortnight was going to be a challenge.
Me: Name a metal or hard rock band that starts with Q
Anyone I asked: Queen
Me: I have them. Who else can you think of?
Anyone I asked: … Nope. You’re on your own.
I had already worked out two others without doing a lot of research and those bands made me wonder exactly how many band names started with the word queen. There is Queens of the Stone Age and Queensrÿche. There’s also Queen Latifah, but I didn’t include her in my list. I think that’s fair.
I should point out though that the first band that came to mind for me wasn’t actually Queen. One of the first heavy bands that I can recall liking was Quiet Riot. Such an under-rated band in my opinion.
Anyhow … This list is going to test my endurance for listening to songs on repeat while driving to work. Here it is.
The Q list
- Quiet Riot—Metal Health (Bang Your Head)
- Queen—One Vision
- Queens of the Stone Age—No One Knows
- Queensrÿche—I Don’t Believe in Love
- Q5—Steel the Light
- Quarterblind—For Freedom For Treason
- Quartz—Fear No Evil
The last three bands required a lot more research than you’d realise. Until they were discovered, this list was looking a lot more desperate than it currently does.
On the bright side, I have discovered a few new heavy bands. That’s one of the reasons for doing this whole challenge.
Worth it?
