52 Guitars, week 31—SGC Guitars Tomcat Stripe

I recently discovered that GraphTech had released some new Ratio Tuned Machine Heads for electric and acoustic guitars. Then I discovered the Sublime Guitar Company (SGC Guitars) had put those machine heads onto one of their USA Custom Tomcats (they tweeted this fact). At the same time, I discovered SGC Guitars plans on putting the GraphTech Ratio Tuned Machine Heads onto their upcoming production models. I was discovering things like I was the James Cook of the guitar world.

I was going to say I was like Christopher Columbus, but I realised I’m Australian.

I also realised the Tomcat Stripe by SGC Guitars is one sexy looking guitar. As regular visitors to this website will know, I have an unhealthy fascination for black and/or white guitars. This guitar is both. It’s also a guitar that takes some old-school body shapes and modernises them ever so slightly. The offset angles in the body shape are sleek and cool. Perhaps my favourite design feature though is the way the headstock shape references the traditional Telecaster and Stratocaster designs through the use of recesses in the wood (this is officially called SGC‘s signature notch). Combined with some beautiful paint application, this headstock looks amazing.

It can’t all be about the look though. There need to be specifications that any true guitar lover will look over in a head-nodding kind of way. This guitar has those too!

  • Chambered mahogany body
  • Rosewood or maple fretboards (I love the rosewood with this design)
  • Maple neck (bolt on)
  • 22 medium jumbo frets
  • Custom wound Sublime TC-90 pickups in neck and bridge positions
  • Stainless steel saddles
  • Master volume and master tone
  • GraphTech TUSQ XL nut
  • Grover tuners

Finished nodding your head? Good … As I mentioned earlier, SGC Guitars placed some GraphTech Ration Tuned Machine Heads on a recent USA Custom Tomcat. I’m not sure if all production models will eventually move to these machine heads, but either way, that list is pretty impressive. The guitar is impressive. I look forward to seeing more of these in the future.

Disclaimer: I’ve not played this guitar. I have not experienced the sound or feel of this guitar. That doesn’t matter. It looks awesome, it’s obviously played by winners and I want one.
