52 Guitars, week 29—Kauer Guitars Daylighter

I love guitar websites that let you build your potential guitar online. Customisation is king these days. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Kauer Guitars is one of those websites. So I went and built myself a sexy black guitar complete with carbon fibre!

The Kauer Guitars Builder is a great tool that lets you discover the options you have for all three of their standard guitar shapes—Daylighter, Starliner and Banshee. I decided to build a custom Daylighter (image below). Here’s the rundown on the inclusions I opted for.

  • Spanish cedar body and neck
  • Metallic black paint
  • Carbon fibre pickguard and truss rod cover
  • Bigsby B5Tailpiece
  • Soapbar Wolfetone K90 pickups

It’s a tiny detail to mention, but I have to point out the fret inlays. I just love the way they swap sides of the fretboard once they hit the 12th fret. There are other fret inlays to choose from, but I’d stick with these. They’re cool!

I opted for the master volume and master tone controls in chrome with a three-way pickup selector. I couldn’t find all of the custom options in the builder that I could see on the Kauer Guitars website, but there were more than enough options for me to build a guitar I would be proud to own. Options that you can see on the website and not in the builder include triple humbucker pickups, individual volume and tone controls for the multiple pickups and alternate locations for the pickup selector.

Having mentioned that, I only designed a Daylighter. I’m off to build a Banshee and a Starliner to see what happens!

Disclaimer: I’ve not played this guitar. I have not experienced the sound or feel of this guitar. That doesn’t matter. It looks awesome, it’s obviously played by winners and I want one.
