I discovered the David Mead: Guitar Gym app through GuitarNoize—who you should absolutely follow on Twitter and/or Facebook—when I was looking at various guitar-related iOS apps. I have a fascination with guitar-related iOS apps to be honest. I love the educational guitar apps, the amplifier simulator apps and most other music apps that allow me to use my guitars on iOS. But with the number of apps out there these days how do you find the good apps?! I’m lucky I follow smart people on Twitter. If you’re discovering the David Mead: Guitar Gym app from this article, you’re lucky through association. Congratulations!
David Mead is a guitarist, writer, teacher and author. He has written the books 10 Minute Guitar Workout and Crash Course Acoustic. In the 1990s he was the Editor of Guitarist and Guitar Techniques magazines. Chances are when he put the content of this app together he knew what he was talking about.
I won’t provide too many screenshots of this app. Doing so would provide you with some simple, yet incredibly effective exercises that will help you improve your guitar skills on a day-to-day basis. My first day in the app showed me I have a long way to go to get to the skill level I’d like to be at. I can say that years of playing Metallica and Megadeth style riffs has seen my rhythm skills outweigh my other skills (as they’re categorised in the app). I have a way to go with my stamina, coordination and ear training. Luckily this app will make that easier, more enjoyable and at a pace I can set myself.
The excercise tablature and descriptions are very well put together as are the app’s instructions. One of the things I like the most about this app is that you can adjust the BPM for each exercise. When you combine that with the app’s ability to provide you with statistics of each exercise you do, you can start to appreciate how this is a useful tool for any guitarist hoping to improve his/her sklillset on the guitar.
Now if I could just get off the Internet and this website I’d be able to use the app more regularly.
