52 Amplifier Heads, week 45—Friedman Pink Taco

I’m a big fan of the Pink Taco.

That’s a tough sentence to follow really. But the Pink Taco by Friedman Amplification is indeed a mighty fine sounding amplifier. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other amplifiers I’ve looked at these past 10 months. It’s also louder than many of those amplifiers. It is still within reason though and the name … Well I am a big fan.

The Pink Taco is a 20 watt, all-American wired tube amplifier head with amazing tones. For a one channel amplifier head, I’d actually say I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the tones I’ve heard. For example …

That video showcases some very nice rock, blues and metal tones. The video also showcases just how responsive the amplifier is to the guitar’s volume control. It’s so simple, but the tones are so good. I can only imagine how good pedals can sound through this amplifier. That appeals to me greatly.

Anyhow, let’s check out the official feature list.

  • 20 watts
  • 1 x 12AX7 preamp tube
  • 2 x EL84 power tubes
  • Bass, Middle and Treble controls
  • Master volume and Gain controls
  • Effects Loop
  • 1 x 16 ohm and 2 x 8 ohm speaker outlets
  • Single channel
  • Single input

Like I said, simple. It’s not too simple though and more importantly to someone who appreciates good design almost as much as good tone, this amp is available in five different Tolex colours. Personally, I’d love to go with the white Tolex. That would then make this amplifier look as good as it would sound. Awesome.

Disclaimer: I’ve not played through this head. I have not experienced the sound or tone of this head other than through video. That doesn’t matter. It looks awesome, it’s obviously played by winners and I want one.
