Last week I wrote about a 15 watt amplifier head. I can’t just come straight back down from those lofty heights. I am now used to the power. I’m power mad! In my search for an amp head that spoke to my metal urges, I discovered the Two-Rock Exo-15. Two-Rock is a cool name. The Exo-15 is an awesome looking head (it appears to be an all metal construction) and the videos I’ve seen make me think the amp could deliver (distorted or not).
As one video reviewer mentioned in this Exo-15 video, if you start with a good clean tone, your pedal-based modifications should be good as well. He worded it better than me though. That video does make think this is a nice clean tone as well. This video review by Premier Guitar does a decent job of showing the overdriven tones the Exo-15 generates. When playing Cream it sounds awesome to be. So, what* does this amp have in it?
- 15 watts
- Treble, mid and bass tone controls
- 4, 8 and 16 ohm speaker outputs
- 2 x 6V6 tubes
- 5AR4 rectifier tube
- 2 x 12AX7 tubes
Not too shabby (as some weird people say). The website specs mention the amp has pre-amp in and power-amp out. The promo photograph on the website indicates a power-amp in and a pre-amp out on the back of the head. I imagine it’s the latter. The only downside I can see to this amp is its apparent cost. As the purpose of this weekly series of amp heads is to find me my first tube amplifier head, this amp is pushing my budget’s boundaries further than I’d hoped. But I couldn’t not include it because the clean tones are so good. If you have any doubt, I think this video by Guitarist Magazine should fix that. This is a very nice sounding amplifier that just looks cool.
* I’m very tempted to substitute the word watt in when referring to amplifiers. I refrained.
Disclaimer: I’ve not played through this head. I have not experienced the sound or tone of this head other than through video. That doesn’t matter. It looks awesome, it’s obviously played by winners and I want one.
