I love a good promo month. Nothing appeals to me more than an entire month dedicated to metal. The \m/ kind that is. Luckily for us all, Toontrack has started Metal Month with a bang (on the snare drum perhaps). This month now looks like it will be a whole lot more interesting to me. … Toontrack brings you Metal Month

52 Amplifier Heads, week 44—3rd Power Dream Solo 2
As I continue on my weekly quest to find the perfect all-tube amplifier for a terrible guitarist such as myself, I do find myself asking “what exactly am I looking for?” When you break it down, most amplifiers are essentially a small cube that contains some tubes, wiring and a whole series of smarts to make all of the components generate that awesome tone we’re all searching for. Luckily, I realised today that another way to represent a cube was with the mathematical terminology of the third power. Why is that lucky you may wonder. Well that’s because I discovered 3rd Power amplifiers. They have a Dream Solo series that includes the Dream Solo 2.
I love it when I make a seemingly pointless ramble tie in to the amplifier I am writing about. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 44—3rd Power Dream Solo 2
52 Amplifier Heads, week 43—Sherlock Amplifiers Angry Ant
The other day this sheila I know reckoned it was hard to pick up on me accent through written words alone. “Fair suck of the sav” I said to meself. Surely I can make it obvious that I’m from strayaa. I mean fair dinkum, how’d ya combat a language barrier when you’re tryin’ to explain a dead set ripper of an amplifier head as part of ya weekly amplifier head series I pondered. “Well struth!” I said to meself. You’d hafta at least make sure ya covered an Aussie amplifier when speakin’ the lingo. So I did me some research and came across this beaut amplifier called the Angry Ant by Sherlock amplifiers.
I just hope youse all follow what I’m tellin’ ya now. I’m sure you’se will all be right as rain. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 43—Sherlock Amplifiers Angry Ant
Dialtone Pickups—travelling guitar video review
Skanky Dave and the Bumpin Uglies is one of the bands chosen to receive the Dialtone Pickups travelling guitar. That’s such an awesome band name. Anyway, Silky Dave and Skank (himself) have given us some great video content to ogle and listen to featuring the Dialtone Pickups travelling guitar. Look and listen … … Dialtone Pickups—travelling guitar video review
Fellow Plectrums Gorilla Grip jazz plectrums
When I realised I was close to releasing this new version of the Scarebear website, I knew the first new article I posted in colour had to involve a vivid and wide range of colours. Nothing is more colourful than the range of Gorilla Grip jazz plectrums from Fellow Plectrums. Not only are they colourful, they’re awesome plectrums. Handy right? … Fellow Plectrums Gorilla Grip jazz plectrums
52 Amplifier Heads, week 42—Koch Studiotone
Regular readers of this weekly series will know that I’m looking for my first tube amplifier head. I’m not in a band and I’m not after something to shake the dust from the window sills. I am after some good tone though. Ideally something that records nicely. Clearly I need a studio tune. Or perhaps a Studiotone by Koch. Same diff perhaps.
That’s lame. It’s late. You get what my mind is still capable of at this hour. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 42—Koch Studiotone
Gibson Les Paul 7 string
A seven string Les Paul certainly isn’t new (Epiphone have the Matt Heafy model already), but a seven string Gibson Les Paul is new. Not only is it new, it’s black and it’s beautiful. This is most likely going to be the most impressive new guitar I see this year. This appeals to me greatly. It’s not just the seven stringed awesomeness that appeals to me though. This guitar comes pre-loaded with Seymour Duncan pickups (the awesome ’59 and JB combo). This guitar is simply screaming perfection for my likes, tastes and needs. … Gibson Les Paul 7 string
52 Amplifier Heads, week 41—Carlsbro Evo 15H
Sometimes I can get rather wordy. I often ramble on about things that I could simply say using one simple sentence. But that’s how I like to write. It’s how I like to talk to people in the real world too. But sometimes I realise that not everybody is like me. Not everybody likes a long winded story. Well if you’ve been following these weekly amplifier articles and you’re one of the people who likes to keep it simple, then this article is for you. Well, once you get past this introductory paragraph I suppose. It’s a bit wordy. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 41—Carlsbro Evo 15H
52 Amplifier Heads, week 40—ENGL Gigmaster 15 Head E315
This week’s amplifier has a lot of hard edges on it. In fact some of those edges seem to be at 90 degrees to each other. That would make them right ENGLs. That’s a terrible joke and I’m not sorry. I’m also not sorry that I am wishing the ENGL Gigmaster 15 head was mine this week. It appears to be the perfect combination of appropriate wattage, metal and blackness. I may be in love with an inanimate object. There may be medication for that. I don’t want it. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 40—ENGL Gigmaster 15 Head E315
7 string guitars—what would you choose?
I love a good guitar. Truth be told, I love a bad guitar too. I just love guitars. This infatuation often has me looking into guitars I don’t have, yet want. Those lists—have-nots and wants—are massive. There are so many options to consider when looking at different guitars. Wood type, body shape, pickup type/configuration, fretboard material, bridge type and a whole lot more. What I’ve been looking into lately though—purely for my own entertainment—is the number of strings on an electric guitar. That is currently the one thing all of my guitars have in common. They’re all six string guitars (until a string breaks). So I’ve been looking into seven string guitars.
There are so many to choose from and many of them are damn affordable. Care to see which models I like the most? Yes? Well read on. Or just look at the picture at the end of this article. Either way … … 7 string guitars—what would you choose?
