52 Amplifier Heads, week 30—VHT Special 6 Ultra Head

Last week I wrote about an amplifier that had all the bells and whistles*. I’m not really a bells or whistles kind of player really. Perhaps I should just be looking for a simple all-tube amplifier that allows me to play guitar through it. Makes sense. I’m barely a guitar player as it is.

The VHT Special 6 Ultra head is a simple low wattage amplifier that can switch from 6 watts to 3 watts. But with the variable watts control you can actually dial in any wattage from 6 to … well almost none. That’s pretty cool. Not overly simplistic either. It sounds cool too as you’ll hear (and see) in this video by Premier Guitar. That video showcases that this simple amplifier head has some pretty cool little features tucked away. Those include:

  • 6 watts (switchable to 3 watts)
  • 1 x 6V6 Poweramp tube
  • 2 x 12AX7 Preamp tubes
  • Variable watts control
  • Depth, Tone, Ultra and Volume controls
  • Effects loop
  • Foot switchable
  • 2 speaker outputs

The Ultra channel is pretty cool. It sounds pretty awesome in the video referenced above too. Very distorted. I like that the Ultra channel has its own input and volume control. Yeah, this could work nicely for me.

Perhaps this amplifier isn’t as simple as I’d initially suggested. Perhaps this has everything I really need. Perhaps this search for the perfect first all-tube amplifier head is going to be tougher than I’d first thought. I don’t remember signing up for difficulties. Maybe my wife will work out a way for me to buy several amplifier heads once this series is complete. Ah, I can hear her laughing already.

* There weren’t really bells and whistles. That was just a figure of speech. Who would make an amplifier head with bells and whistles in it?!

Disclaimer: I’ve not played through this head. I have not experienced the sound or tone of this head other than through video. That doesn’t matter. It looks awesome, it’s obviously played by winners and I want one.
