Did you know that a positron is also called an antielectron? Did you also know that when a low-energy positron smashes into a low-energy electron that annihilation occurs? Awesome right? That’s the kind of brutality that appeals to a true metal-head like me. Also positron is just a cool sounding word. Cool … Sounding … Surely that translates into an awesome amplifier if you’re the Diamond Amplifications Positron 18 watt head. Let’s hope so, because I want one. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 34—Diamond Amplification Positron

52 Amplifier Heads, week 33—Carvin V3M
Week 33 already. Wow, we’re carvin’ through this year. I feel this week’s amplifier head needs to pack more punch than usual. Perhaps I should allow an amplifier into the series that is way over the usual wattage I’m looking for. But it has to still be suitable for my home playing/recording needs. I know … the Carvin V3M. OK, I may have hinted at what the amplifier would be with the intro sentences to this article and the article/page title does give it away week after week, but I enjoy putting these introductions together all the same.
Sometimes I surprise myself. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 33—Carvin V3M
52 Amplifier Heads, week 32—Hayden Mini MoFo Head 15W
Seriously. What’s with all the amplifier manufacturers in the United Kingdom? Why are there so many? Why do they all seem so cool? Why are they making it so difficult for me to choose the all-tube amplifier I will end up buying? I don’t know the answers to these questions I but I do know that Hayden Amplifiers are now on my list. Damn them and their Mini MoFo Head (15W).
I was tempted to throw in some cursing there, but figured the amplifier’s name covered all the swearing this article needs. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 32—Hayden Mini MoFo Head 15W
52 Amplifier Heads, week 31—The Valve 105 ‘Bimbo’ head
Valve amps. Tube amps. Same thing. It just depends where you reside mostly. Me, I use both terms. It’s as close to bilingual as I get. For today’s article however I’ll try and stick with the term valve. Why? Well the manufacturer of the amplifier I’m craving this week is The Valve Amplification. I imagine they like to use valves in their amplifiers. Especially the 105 Bimbo head. That’s the amp I want this week. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 31—The Valve 105 ‘Bimbo’ head
52 Amplifier Heads, week 30—VHT Special 6 Ultra Head
Last week I wrote about an amplifier that had all the bells and whistles*. I’m not really a bells or whistles kind of player really. Perhaps I should just be looking for a simple all-tube amplifier that allows me to play guitar through it. Makes sense. I’m barely a guitar player as it is. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 30—VHT Special 6 Ultra Head
52 Amplifier Heads, week 27—Palmer EINS
Sometimes when researching guitar amplifiers I not only come across something that meets my criteria, I also come across a brand that markets in a way that appeals to me. It does so by being humorous. Palmer Musical Instruments is such a brand. When I first discovered their little one watt amp (the Palmer EINS) I couldn’t help but notice the website header with slogans such as fat is beautiful and who’s up for a threesome?. Of course they’re referring to tone and their triple single ended amplifier, but all the same, I was hooked. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 27—Palmer EINS
52 Amplifier Heads, week 29—Peavey ValveKing Micro-head
I’ll be honest. I’ve been looking forward to writing this week’s article. I know weeks in advance for the most part what the upcoming amplifier will be in this weekly series of 52 Amplifiers. Knowing that week 29 is finally here is rewarding because I finally get to write about the Peavey ValveKing Micro-head. The reason I’m excited is that I’ve wanted a Peavey amplifier for almost as long as I’ve been playing guitar. That is a long time and a lot of things happened along the way. I’ve always known however that I’d get around to purchasing a Peavey eventually. This may be that time. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 29—Peavey ValveKing Micro-head
52 Amplifier Heads, week 28—Traynor Dark Horse 15H
As I write this week’s entry in the 52 Amplifiers article series many fellow Queenslanders will be watching the State of Origin series. If you’re unsure what any of that means, never fear. All you need to know is that the State of Origin is a sporting event that I’m not interested in. Having said that, I figured I’d try to tackle this week’s Blog post with as many football innuendos as possible. Tying in these innuendos to the Traynor DH15H shouldn’t be too hard really. You see, the DH in DH15H stands for Dark Horse which is exactly what New South Wales was before the State of Origin began. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 28—Traynor Dark Horse 15H
52 Amplifier Heads, week 26—Suhr Corso 5
At the halfway mark of this series of bedroom friendly all-tube amplifier heads, I thought I’d step it up a notch. I’m sure many followers have been thinking that the longer this series went on, the weaker the amplifier quality would get. I may have thought that too when I first started this series—52 amplifiers heads from 52 different manufacturers is a big ask. But not today. Not at the halfway mark. No, with a 5 watt amplifier head from Suhr, I think this series is alive and kicking. It also helps that the Corso 5 is a sexy looking amp head. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 26—Suhr Corso 5
52 Amplifier Heads, week 25—DV Mark Galileo 15
I like to every now and then come across something that looks simple, but has more to it than meets the eye. A bit like a Transformer really. Having said that, I don’t want an amp head that turns into a small robot with a mind of its own. That would be too much to deal with when you wanted to play guitar.
“Get back here and sit on the cabinet! Stop trying to save the world!”
Luckily the DV Mark Galileo 15 doesn’t appear to turn into anything other than the all-tube packed amplifier it starts off as. But it does have a lot more tube action than I’d have expected for a small amplifier head. That’s exactly the level of surprise I’m comfortable with. … 52 Amplifier Heads, week 25—DV Mark Galileo 15
